Wildcat Soccer Falls to Missouri, 3-1
Sept. 7, 2003
Columbia, Mo. (Sept. 7) - In the midst of a three-game road swing, the University of Arizona women's soccer team (1-3-0) dropped its contest on Sunday, 3-1, to host team Missouri (4-0-0) at the Nike Tiger Invitational in Columbia, Mo.
The Tigers scored on each of their first three shots in the match. They struck first at 7:49, again at 14:08 and finally at 19:59. The three goals would be all Missouri would need to take the contest.
After being out-shot, 5-4, by Missouri in the first half, Arizona picked up the pressure in the second half, out-shooting the Tigers by a 9-6 margin for the period. The Cats' persistence paid off, as junior midfielder Vanesha Bailey broke the shutout in the 62nd minute off a cross by sophomore midfielder Mallory Miller. The Wildcats were unable to score again for the remainder of the game.
'We didn't play poorly in the first half,' said first-year head coach Dan Tobias. 'They (Missouri) are just a good team, and they were quite proficient with the chances they got. Despite being down 3-0 at the half, we kept battling and that says a lot about the character of our team.
'We are getting our opportunities and not finishing them. Our opponents are finishing their opportunities, and right now that seems to be the difference in the results. We just have to keep pushing forward and keep making progress. The goal is to turn that progress into positive results.'
The Wildcats finished the match with a narrow 13-11 advantage in shots and led 6-5 in shots on-goal. Miller had a game-high six shots, three on-goal, while Bailey and sophomore midfielder Traci Adler finished with two shots each. Junior goalkeeper Krystal Werges played the full 90 minutes for the Cats, recording a pair of saves.
Arizona wraps up its three-game road swing next weekend with a contest in Flagstaff against Northern Arizona on Sunday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m.
