California Leads After First Round of The Topy Cup

FUKUSHIMA PREFECTURE, Japan - California began the 2003-04 season as the opening-round leader Tuesday at The Topy Cup U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship at Tanagura Country Club. The Golden Bears carded a team score of 300 to pace the five-team field by seven shots.
Last season, Cal won a nation's-best seven tournament titles.
South Carolina, the only other team representing the United States, is in second with a score of 307. Tohoku Fukushi is third at 309, followed by Nippon Sport Science University at 312 and Nagoya University of Commerce at 322.
Cal senior Sarah Huarte leads the individual race by one shot, firing a first round of one-under 71. The 2003 honorable mention All-American shot a plus-two 38 on the front nine before finding her rhythm on the back nine at three-under 33.
Nippon's N. Yasuda is in second with a 72, while Cal sophomore Sophia Sheridan and Nagoya's E. Ikeda are tied for third at 73. Sheridan finished strong with a one-under 35 on the back nine.
Rounding out the other Bears' results are senior Anna Temple in 12th (77), sophomore Sofie Andersson in a tie for 15th (79) and senior Claire Dury in 18th (80). The top four of five scores count towards the team score.
The second of three rounds of The Topy Cup tees off Wednesday at 8 a.m. local time (10 hours ahead of California).
