Arizona Opens 2003-04 Nationally Ranked in Two Men's Golf Polls

Sept. 11, 2003

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team will open the 2003-04 season nationally ranked in both major college golf polls, as ranking information was released Thursday by the Golf Coaches Association of America and Golf World magazine.

Arizona received 495 points in the season-opening Precept/CGAA Division I Coaches Poll to rank No. 11 nationally. The Cats are one of five Pacific-10 Conference teams to be listed in the preseason Precept Coaches Poll. The Cats also received 159 points in the Golf World Coaches Poll to rank 16th nationally. Defending national champion Clemson sits atop both polls to open 2003-04.

It marks the fourth straight year that Arizona has been nationally ranked to start the season. The last time the Wildcats failed to crack the preseason top 25 came in the 1999-2000 campaign, when the club was anchored by a senior, a sophomore and two freshmen. That group went on to finish in third place at the 2000 NCAA Men's Golf Championships.

Arizona returns six letterwinners from last season's Pac-10 and NCAA West Regional runner-up that advanced to the NCAA Championships for the 17th consecutive season. However, just two players, senior Chris Nallen and sophomore Blaine Peffley saw action in more than five varsity events last season.

The Wildcats open the 2003-04 campaign tomorrow, Sept. 12, at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
