Beavers Lose 2-1 To No. 10 Duke
Sept. 12, 2003
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - -
An unlucky bounce with nine seconds remaining in regulation gave the OSU women's soccer team its first loss of the season, 2-1 against the 10th-ranked Duke Blue Devils in the opening game of the 2003 Wake Forest adidas Women's Soccer Classic.
With the loss, the Beavers' record drops to 3-1-1, while the Blue Devils stay unbeaten at 4-0-1.
Duke's free kick with 14 seconds remaining was struck hard and was sailing wide of the net, but bounced off Beaver defender Cara Miller and ricocheted into the net for the Duke win.
The Beavers drew first blood as Brianna Monka scored in the 20th minute, giving the Beavers an early 1-0 advantage. With that goal, Monka became the team's leading scorer with four goals.
OSU controlled the game during the first half, putting several scoring chances together and keeping the pressure on Duke early on.
In the second half, the Blue Devils came out strong and scored in the 78th and 90th minutes to secure the victory. The Blue Devils' Kate Seibert scored the tying goal with a header off a free kick at 77:58.
'We felt like we should have won the game,' said Beavers head coach Steve Fennah. 'I bet both teams felt that way. We really controlled the game early, but Duke came on strong and dominated much of the second half. They really came at us. To lose on an own goal with nine seconds left is just really, really tough.'
The women's soccer team returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 14th when they play the host team Wake Forest at 11 a.m. Pacific.
