Volleyball Picks Up 3-1 Win Over Winthrop

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Four Oregon State players finished with double-figure kills as the Beaver volleyball team defeated Winthrop, 3-1, at the SpringHill Suites Charlotte Classic on Friday. Game scores were 30-25, 29-31, 30-23 and 33-31.
The Beavers snapped a two-match losing streak and improved to 7-2, while Winthrop dropped its fourth straight to fall to 3-4.
'We grinded it out. We didn't pass very well, but even with the bad passing, we still had a pretty good offense,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'It's a win though, and we'll take it.'
Allison Lawrence hit .390 and led all players with 20 kills for her second 20-plus kill match of the year. Anne Watts-Roberts hit .500 with 14 kills, and Amanda Eggert and Karah Rhoades chipped in 11 kills apiece.
OSU finished the match with 64 kills on .268 hitting. Winthrop hit .199 with 59 kills, led by Mary Hock with 15.
Watts-Roberts also led OSU's defense with 13 digs to pick up her first double-double as a Beaver. Katelyn Healy picked up 11 digs, and K.C. Frederic had 10, but the Beavers were outdug by Winthrop, 62-58. Hock led all players with 20.
The Beavers continue tournament action with two matches Saturday. OSU will play Campbell at 8 a.m. PDT and Charlotte at 4:30 p.m. PDT
