Volleyball Captures Tournament Championship With Aggie Sweep
Sept. 13, 2003
COLLEGE STATION, Texas - With an outstanding performance, senior Katie Olsovsky helped lead the No. 1 USC women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-27, 30-15, 30-22) victory over Texas A&M in the final match of the McDonald's-Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday night. The Women of Troy captured the tournament championship with sweeps over Centenary, Southwest Missouri State and the Aggies.
For their performances in the three-day tournament, Keao Burdine (3.22 kills and 2.78 digs per game, .365) and Emily Adams (4.33 kills and 1.33 blocks per game, .464) were named to the all-tournament team, while April Ross (3.33 kills, 3.00 digs and 1.33 service aces per game) was honored as tournament MVP - her third such honor this season.
With help from 2,846 loud and enthusiastic fans, the Aggies were at the top of their game at the start of the match. Texas A&M jumped out to an 11-7 lead and maintained the advantage for most of the first game thanks to a near-flawless defensive effort.
USC was able to tie the score a total of seven times, but it was not until the final attempt at 24-24 that the Women of Troy managed to gain momentum and take the lead. With Ross at the line, The Trojans rattled off five consecutive points and never looked back. USC outscored the Aggies 7-to-3 in the stretch to win 30-27.
The let down of the first game seemed to overwhelm the Aggies, who could not find their rhythm upon returning to the court. The Women of Troy opened with a 10-point lead (15-5) in the second game and maintained the double-digit edge as they rolled to a 30-15 victory. USC held the Aggies to a .057 attack percentage.
Texas A&M limited its errors in the final game, but it was not enough as the Trojans out-powered the Aggies thanks to the play of Olsovsky. Olsovsky had six of her team-high 16 kills in the final game as USC captured a final 30-22 game win.
In addition to kills, Olsovsky led with 17.0 points and a .714 attack percentage after committing only one error in the match. Keao Burdine (13 kills, 15.5 points), Emily Adams (11 kills, 14.0 points) and Ross (10 kills, 15.5 points, 5 service aces) also posted double digits in the effort.
