Washington State Upsets No. 10 Duke

Sept. 14, 2003

Washington State beat No. 10 Duke with a lone goal by senior forward Rachel Rodrick Sunday, to finish 1-1 in the adidas Wake Forest Tournament.

Neither team was able to create many scoring opportunities in the first half. WSU recorded three shots, forcing one save by Duke goalkeeper Kate Straka. The Blue Devils had two shots and two corner kick opportunities, compared to WSU's one.

At the 74:10 mark, Washington State's leading scorer, Rodrick put away the game winner to give the Cougs a 1-1 record for the tournament.

Rodrick has scored in each of the last three games the Cougs have played, including the game winners against Montana and Duke.

'This was a great game between two good teams,' WSU Head Coach Matt Potter said. 'It was a bit of a chess match, but we took advantage of the opportunity presented to us.

'Duke is a very talented and organized team. We are very happy to come away from this game with a positive result.'

'I thought we played well, but we showed our youth a little today,' Duke Head Coach Robbie Church said. 'I take my hat off to Washington State. You could tell it was going to be a one-goal game. They did a better job of sticking to their game plan.'

Washington State had three selections to the All-Tournament team, Rodrick and senior defenders Shay Hobby and Mariette Boyce.

The win puts WSU at 2-3 overall having faced three nationally ranked teams.

The Cougars host New Mexico Friday, Sept. 19 in Pullman for their next match.
