Volleyball Drops Pac-10 Opener To No. 4 Stanford, 3-1
Sept. 18, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Allison Lawrence had 20 kills for Oregon State, but the Beaver volleyball team lost to No. 4 Stanford, 3-1, in the Pacific-10 opener for both teams Friday night. The Cardinal won, 30-27, 27-30, 30-22, and 30-19.
'We played a good match. We were right with them in games one and two and forced Stanford to make some changes, which they did,' coach Nancy Somera said. 'Games three and four just got away from us before we could make some counter-adjustments.'
Lawrence picked up her third 20-plus kill performance of the year, while Ogonna Nnamani led Stanford with 22 kills. Four Stanford players finished with double-figures, as the Cardinal (7-2, 1-0 Pac-10) hit .337 with 76 kills. Amanda Eggert (13) and Karah Rhoades joined Lawrence in double-figures for the Beavers, who hit .193 with 61 kills.
Rhoades and Lawrence finished with double-doubles, with 14 and 12 digs respectively. Katelyn Healy added 10 digs for OSU (7-3, 0-1), but the Beavers were outdug 74-59. Stanford's Leahi Hall led all players with 17, and four other Cardinal players finished with double-digits.
Stanford also outblocked the Beavers, 14-10. Jennifer Harvey, who hit .632 with 14 kills, led the effort at the net with nine blocks for the Cardinal. Eggert led the Beavers with four blocks.
Somera was pleased with her team's performance in its first match against a ranked opponent this season.
'If we can bring the effort we had tonight consistently throughout conference play, we're going to get some wins,' she said.
Stanford coach John Dunning echoed those sentiments, saying, 'This team is going to be a good one.'
The Beavers will look for their first Pac-10 win Friday against No. 12 California at 7 p.m. in Gill Coliseum.
