Sept. 19, 2003
The Arizona State men's golf team, fresh off its season-opening tournament win at the Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M. last weekend, will challenge one of the top fields in collegiate golf Sept. 22-23, as The Preview by Ping and Golfweek is contested at the Cascades Course at The Homestead Resort in Virginia. Live hole-by-hole scoring will be available at Golfstat.com.
The two-day event, with 36 holes on Monday and 18 holes on Tuesday, will be played on one of the most historic and challenging courses in the country. The Cascades Course has played host to such events as the 2000 USGA Men's Mid-Amateur, the 1995 PGA Senior Tour Shootout, the 1967 USGA Women's Open Championship and the 1988 USGA Men's Amateur Championship .
Arizona State's lineup will consist of 2003 NCAA champion Alejandro Canizares, 2001 U.S. Public Links champion Chez Reavie, 2001 Arizona Amateur champion Jesse Mueller, Ben Flam and Pat Moore. ASU won its first tournament of the year for the first time since 1995-96 when it captured the Tucker Intercollegiate, the same year it won its second national title.
The field of 15 teams is comprised of the top programs invited from last season NCAA Championships, as ASU finished sixth. Defending champion Clemson headlines the event which boasts the top 13 teams in the current Precept/GCAA poll and 14 of the top 20 in the poll.
The Preview is a precursor to the 2004 NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship, that Virginia Tech will host at The Homestead, June 1-4, 2004.
