UW Tops Fresno State 3-0 in Nike Invitational
Sept. 19, 2003
SEATTLE - Junior Tina Frimpong scored twice in the opening 34 minutes Friday, leading 20th-ranked Washington to a 3-0 win over Fresno State in the opening round of the Husky/Nike Invitational at Husky Soccer Field.
The Huskies (4-1-2) dominated the game, outshooting Fresno State by a commanding 28-4 count. Washington goalkeeper Lisa Brookens was required to make only two saves en route to her second shutout. The Bulldogs (3-3-2) got four saves from Jeannette Paine.
Frimpong opened the scoring at 29:05, converting a pass from Sara Davis. She dribbled down the left side and lined a 12-yard shot inside the left post.
The product of Hudson's Bay High School in Vancouver, Wash. scored again less than four minutes later with her team-leading sixth goal of the season. Frimpong ran on to a pass from Kim Taylor and pushed the ball into the right side of the goal from 10 yards out.
UW senior Blair Ruport capped the scoring six minutes into the second half. She booted the ball in during a scramble in front of the FSU goalmouth at 51:17.
In the opening game of the tournament, 13th-ranked Portland beat No. 6 Texas 2-0 despite being outshot by a 20-8 margin. The defending national champion Pilots netted their first shot less than three minutes into the contest.
Portland's Jennifer Tuttle collected a long pass from Kristen Rogers and ran toward the goal uncontested. Longhorn goalkeeper Dana Hall came off her line but Tuttle dribbled past and slotted a 10-yard shot into the open net from the left side.
Portland scored again at 31:54 when Wanda Rozwadowska gathered a loose ball, dribbled 30 yards toward the left side of the goal and slipped the ball into the open net after beating Hall on the dribble. Hall was credited with two saves, both in the final minutes.
Pilot goalkeeper Cori Alexander registered 10 saves as Texas controlled the run of play for most of the game. The Longhorns outshot UP 11-2 in the second half.
The teams exchange opponents Sunday with FSU and Portland meeting at 11 a.m. and the Huskies hosting Texas at 1:30 p.m.
