OSU Falls To No. 6 Pepperdine 2-0
Sept. 21, 2003
MALIBU, Calif. - -
The Oregon State women's soccer team fell victim to another top-10 team as it lost 2-0 at No. 6 Pepperdine Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Beavers' record dropped to 3-4-1, while Pepperdine increased its record to 7-1-0.
Pepperdine's Megan Woods gave the Waves an early 1-0 lead in the 21st minute. The play started with a shot by the Waves' Lacey Ubaldi. Beaver goalkeeper Melissa Onstad made the save, but was unable to control the ball and Woods sent it into the back of the net.
A penalty kick in the 72nd minute sealed the fate for the Beavers. Ubaldi sent the penalty kick past Onstad to give the Waves a 2-0 lead. Pepperdine has shut out six of eight opponents this year.
OSU had a good chance early to take the lead when a shot hit the crossbar, but after that, put just one shot on goal.
'We battled hard and played well in spells,' said OSU coach Steve Fennah. 'We were unlucky early on and could have had a lead in the first half when a shot hit the crossbar and went out.
'We played a very good team on its home field and they played well. We're excited to go home and we'll basically have three weeks to regroup and continue our growth process.'
Onstad recorded 11 saves on the day; Pepperdine outshot the Beavers 21-8.
The Beavers' next game is Sunday, September 28th at noon against Portland State in Corvallis.
