Bears Compete at Stanford Invitational

CAL TRAVELS TO STANFORD INVITATIONAL: After a week off from competition, the California cross country teams travel to the Stanford Invitational Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Stanford Golf Course. The Golden Bears will send about 21 athletes to compete in three different races. Cal has entries in the non-scored 5000m at 3:45 p.m., the women's 4000m at 4:10 p.m. and the men's 4000m at 4:30 p.m. Teams competing are primarily from the West Coast, but Wisconsin and Arkansas also make the trek to the Farm.
BEARS LINEUP: The Cal women entered in the 5000m are Elizabeth Mayeda, Lisa Sandoval, Natalie Davila and Lauren Barbieri. The Bear women running in the 4000m are Bridget Duffy, Christy Borak, Abby Parker, Maja Ruznic, Eva Markiewicz, Samantha Jones, Pippa Macdonald and Lindsey Maclise. In the men's 4000m, Giliat Ghebray, Kevin Davis, Ozzie Pina, Eric Roberts, David Torrence, Trevor Uyemura, Abadir Barre and Tom Allen look to excel for Cal.
2002 STANFORD INVITE IN REVIEW: The Cal men finished eighth with 249 points, while the women took 14th (412) at the 2002 Stanford Invitational. Senior Carlos Carballo paced the Bears with a 20th-place showing (25:11.7) over the 8000m course. Sophomore Bridget Duffy was the Cal women's top harrier in 42nd place (22:22) in the 6000m race.
A LOOK BACK ON THE AGGIE INVITE: Cal sent a small contingent Sept. 13 to the Aggie Open. On the men's side, Carlos Carballo led the way with a third-place finish over the 8000m course with a time of 25:00.20. Freshman David Torrence grabbed 20th in 26:41.00. Senior Tom Allen crossed the finish line in 28th place (27:06.00). In the women's competition, redshirt freshman Elizabeth Mayeda paced Cal in 70th with a time of 20:31.90. Redshirt freshman Lisa Sandoval and junior Natalie Davila were next in 100th and 101st place, respectively, clocking in at 22:52.30 and 22:55:10. Sophomore Lauren Barbieri rounded out the results for the Bears in 106th (23:52.30).
DID YOU KNOW I?: Several Bay Area products are part of the foundation of this year's Cal cross country program. Those include Oakland's Bridget Duffy, Menlo Park's Christy Borak, San Francisco's Maja Ruznic, Martinez's Samantha Jones and Eric Roberts, San Jose's Girmay Guangul and Union City's Giliat Ghebray.
DID YOU KNOW II?: Freshman Pippa Macdonald's father, Duncan Macdonald, was a miler at Stanford, a former U.S. national champion and American record holder in the 5000m, and a 1976 Olympian. Junior Abby Parker's uncle, Ian Turner, competed for Cal in crew and won an Olympic gold medal in 1948.
