Sept. 22, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team shot a 13-over-par 293 Monday and stands in sixth place at The Preview by Ping and Golfweek in Hot Springs, Va.
Arizona used a pair of two-over 72s Monday to finish the opening round with a 293 (+13) team total. The Wildcats are six strokes off the pace set by first-round leader Clemson, who carded an opening-round 293. Augusta State (290) and North Carolina (291) round out the top three places.
Individually, freshman Josh Esler and junior Nick Juszczak anchored the Wildcat lineup, as both tallied a two-over 72 and are tied for 11th place. Esler, a native of Wauconda, Ill., rebounded from a double bogey on his opening hole to play the rest of the round at even par, including a pair of birdies. Juszczak, meanwhile, rode a bit of a roller coaster as he collected five birdies and seven bogeys over his 18 holes. All five of Juszczak's birdies came in a six-hole stretch to close his front nine.
Also competing for Arizona is senior Chris Nallen, who currently stands in a tie for 28th place after a four-over 74, freshman Henry Liaw, who is tied for 36th place at 75 (+4), and junior Nathan Lashley, who is tied for 52nd place at 77 (+7).
The tournament was shortened to 36 holes when rain forced the cancellation of the second round of Monday. The tournament will conclude Tuesday afternoon. Tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. EDT with the Wildcats scheduled to tee off between 8:15-8:33 a.m.
The Preview by Ping and Golfweek is being contested at The Homestead Resort's Cascades Course, a par 70, 6,679-yard layout. Live tournament scoring is available at www.golfstat.com.
