No. 11 Cal Volleyball Defeats Washington State, 3-0

BERKELEY, CA - The No. 11 ranked Cal women's volleyball team (11-0, 3-0) upended Washington State (5-7, 2-1), 3-0 (30-27, 30-28, 30-22) Thursday evening at Haas Pavilion. The Bears recorded an impressive 14 service aces versus the Cougars, including four service aces apiece from junior All-American Mia Jerkov and sophomore outside hitter Jenna Brown. Jerkov also paced Cal with 13 kills, while sophomore middle hitter Alicia Powers hit .692 with nine kills and no errors in 13 attempts. Freshman libero Jillian Davis led the Bears with 11 digs.
Cal had to play tough against a talented, but young Washington State team that starts four freshmen. The Bears were able to win game one behind seven service aces and six kills by Jerkov, 30-27. In game two, Cal had an outstanding comeback as the Bears were down 27-23 at one point, but battled back and were finally able to tie the contest, 28-28, on a service ace by Jerkov. Cal was then able to put game two away on block assists by Powers and Brown, followed by a solo block by Powers.
In game three the Bears again had to battle against a determined Cougar squad. Cal was ahead 29-23, but WSU came back to score the next five points to get within, 29-28. Finally, Cougar freshman Kristen Carlson's kill attempt went long to give the Bears the 30-28 match clinching win. WSU was led by senior Zanda Bautre's 12 kills and Carlson chipped in 10 kills.
The Bears will next host No. 13 Washington, Friday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion. The match will feature two of the nation's four undefeated teams ranked in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll as both Cal and the Huskies are 11-0 overall.
