No. 11 California Volleyball Sweeps Washington State

BERKELEY, Calif. -- California, ranked 11th nationally, stayed undefeated with a 30-27, 30-28, 30-28, sweep of Washington State volleyball at Haas Pavilion Thursday night.
WSU is now 5-7 overall and 2-1 in Pac-10 play while California moves to 11-0 overall and stays among the Pac-10 leaders with a 3-0 conference record.
Cal's Mia Jerkov lead all players with 13 kills (.086) and added four aces and 10 digs. Alicia Powers and Camille Laffall each had nine kills while Jillian Davis had a match-high 11 digs. Setter Samantha Carter had 36 assists and joined Powers and Leffall with a pair of blocks.
Sole senior Zanda Bautre led the Cougars with 12 kills (.333) while Kristen Carlson added 10 kills. Brenn Larson had 34 assists while Jennifer Todd had six blocks. Larson and Bautre were the digs leaders with eight each. ,
WSU out-blocked the Bears nine to five and the Cougars hit .243 and held Cal to .214. Cal had 14 aces with Jerkov and Brown serving four each.
The Golden Bears used seven service aces and a combined 11 kills from Jerkov and Leffall to edge the Cougars in game one, 30-27. WSU hit .438 and had two blocks while Cal hit .317 but did not stop one at the net.
WSU had a 28-24 lead in the second game when Jerkov went to the serving line and the Bears battled back with four straight points. The Cougars took a timeout with the score knotted at 28, but Cal's Alicia Powers came back with a kill and a block for a 30-28 win. In this game, WSU hit .095 and Cal hit .065.
Cal took a 27-23 lead in the third game when Jenna Brown served two aces and put the Bears at match point. But Brown served into the net and the ball went to Bautre's service, the Cougars down 29-24. Cal committed an attack error followed by a block from Todd and kills from Bautre and Carlson. With the Cougars within one at 29-28, Cal took a timeout. Carlson hit the ball in the corner but the linejudge called it out and the game ended, 30-28 Golden Bears the victors.
Washington State travels across the Bay to take on No. 4 Stanford (8-2, 2-0) Friday night at Maples Pavilion.
