No. 23 Women Of Troy Register 3-0 Upset At No. 13 Santa Clara
Sept. 26, 2003
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Freshman Rosa Anna Tantillo scored two goals and added an assist Friday and the No. 23 USC Trojans upset the No. 13 Santa Clara Broncos, 3-0, in non-conference action at Buck Shaw Stadium. The Women of Troy have won two straight matches against the Broncos after USC defeated then-No. 8 Santa Clara last year, 1-0.
USC improved to 4-3-2 overall while Santa Clara fell to 3-3-3 on the season.
'It was a great result for the program, but it was only one game and we have to come back and play a tough Loyola Marymount team on Sunday,' said USC head coach Jim Millinder. 'This was the first time this season where I felt we played hard for 90 minutes. I thought our defenders did a great job tonight.'
It was only the ninth loss for Santa Clara at home in the last six seasons (67 matches). It also matched the worst loss for Santa Clara in the last 12 seasons, equaling last year's 3-0 loss to Stanford.
Goalkeeper Julie Peterson made four saves for the Women of Troy to register her third shutout of the season and 11th in her career, three away from tying the school record.
USC opened the scoring at 5:55 when defender Nikki Goza headed the ball to Tantillo, who split the Broncos defense and scored on the breakaway. The Women of Troy controlled the tempo in the first half, but had to face a fierce Bronco rally at the start of the second half.
Santa Clara had a chance to tie the game on a penalty kick in the 72nd minute by Leslie Osborne, but her attempt hit the crossbar. The Trojans answered at 79:59 when Jessica Edwards registered her fourth goal of the season off a Tantillo pass at the top of the penalty box. Edwards dribbled past Santa Clara goalie Alyssa Sobolik and floated a shot for USC's second goal of the match.
'I thought it was a huge boost after they missed the penalty kick,' said Millinder. 'We were able to counter attack and frustrate them, but Santa Clara is an excellent team and will definitely be there at the end of the season.'
Tantillo added her second goal and fifth of the season on a penalty kick at 85:32.
The Women of Troy will play at Loyola Marymount on Sunday (Sept. 28) at 1 p.m.
