Washington's 11-Match Win Streak Snapped By California

BERKELEY, Calif.- The 13th-ranked Washington volleyball team lost its first match of the season this evening to the 11th-ranked California Bears. The 30-25, 22-30, 21-30, 25-30 loss snaps the Huskies' 11 match win streak and drops UW to 11-1 overall and 2-1 in the Pac-10. Cal improves to 12-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference.
Washington won game one, 30-25 as it out hit California, .359 to .317. Alexis McDonald (Long Beach, Calif.) and Sanja Tomasevic (Uzice, Yugoslavia) each recorded four kills in the game as the Dawgs committed just three attack errors in the series.
California out hit the Huskies in each of the next three games to take the match victory. A trio of players led the Bear offense with double-figure kills, including Mia Jerkov with 30, Gabrielle Abernathy with 17 and Camille Leffall with 11.
Cal edged the Huskies in nearly every offensive category with the exception of blocks where Washington held the 12-9 advantage.
Libba Lawrence (West Linn, Ore.) picked up 11 digs to anchor the UW defense, while Tomasevic added 10 digs and six blocks.
Washington's weekend schedule gets no easier as the Huskies take on the fourth-ranked Stanford Cardinal tomorrow at 7 p.m. in Palo Alto.
