Wildcat Soccer Edged by UNLV, 2-1
Sept. 27, 2003
Missoula, Mont. (Sept. 27) - Despite out-shooting UNLV, 14-7, the University of Arizona women's soccer team was edged by the Rebels, 2-1, in a neutral contest played in Missoula, Mont., on Saturday. The loss ended a four-game unbeaten streak for the Cats, sending them to 4-4-1 on the year, while UNLV improved to 6-3-1.
All three of the contest's goals were scored in the first half. UNLV struck first with a goal off a long-range free kick in the 13th minute. Junior midfielder Vanesha Bailey answered for the Wildcats at 24:22 off a double-assist from forwards Candice Wilks and Kelly Nelson. The game-winner was another long-range shot for the Rebels, scored with just under six minutes remaining in the first half.
Neither team scored in the second half, although the Wildcats held a definitive 6-2 edge in shots for the period.
Wilks finished with a game-high four shots, including one on-goal, and Bailey had three shots, with two on-goal. Nelson and fellow sophomore Mallory Miller contributed two shots apiece. Sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Juarez saw most of the action in the nets for Arizona, registering three saves in 88 minutes of action.
'We certainly weren't without our chances today,' said first-year head coach Dan Tobias. 'We had good chances, point-blank shots that we just didn't finish. We created high-quality chances but didn't get them into the back of the net.
'We keep letting early goals get the best of us. We're not giving our opponents many shots or corner kicks, but this is sometimes a game of mistakes. UNLV scored two incredible long-range goals. From our standpoint, we just need to have better pressure on the ball.'
The Wildcats will wrap up a three-game road swing next weekend in San Diego, Calif. Arizona will play at the University of San Diego on Friday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m.
