Portland State Tops OSU 2-0
Sept. 28, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - -
Oregon State (3-5-1) suffered a 2-0 setback at the hands of Portland State in non-league women's soccer action on Sunday at Lorenz Field at Valley Stadium.
PSU (5-5-0) took a 1-0 lead in the 24th minute when Sophia Mundy capitalized on a through-pass from Karly Larsen to the right side in the box. Mundy's shot deflected off the post and past OSU keeper Melissa Onstad.
'We can point to bad luck, but I think moreso, we can point to the fact that we didn't work hard enough to deserve the game,' OSU coach SteveFennah said. 'You have to work hard to create your own luck, and we didn't do that. We didn't work hard enough today.
'Give Portland State a lot of credit, they deserved to win. Yes, we had some chances along the way - we had tons of chances to kill the game, but we didn't take advantage of them and that's what it comes down to at the end of the day. We give Portland State credit.
'We have to pick ourselves up and start outworking an opponent,' Fennah said. 'Until you outwork an opponent, you're not going to win a game.'
Baker and Brianna Monka put shots off the crossbar in the second half, but OSU's best chance to equalize came at the 52:40 mark when Baker was taken down in the box and awarded a penalty kick. Baker sent a low shot to the right corner that was saved by PSU keeper Joell Giger.
The Vikings got an insurance goal less than two minutes later when Annie Peccia headed in a Julie Forrest corner kick at 54:24.
Giger had five saves on the day, as did Onstad.
With the loss, OSU has now dropped five games in a row.
OSU hosts Weber State Friday, Oct. 3, at 12:30 p.m. in the first game of a double-header that also features the men's squad taking on defending national champion UCLA at approximately 3 p.m.
