TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona baseball program's 2002-03 recruiting class has been ranked fourth in the nation, Collegiate Baseball newspaper announced today.

The No. 4 ranking of head coach Andy Lopez's second class at UA follows up last season's No. 10 mark. Due to the large number of recruits that sign professional contracts, baseball recruiting rankings are not released until the start of school when the student-athletes are on campus and officially on the roster.

'We're making significant strides in terms of getting the type of players we want here at Arizona,' Lopez said. 'We're happy with the guys that showed up in this recruiting class and we think we've addressed some of the areas of need from last season. The ranking is really a tribute to the excellent work that (recruiting coordinator) Mark (Wasikowski) puts into our recruiting effort.'

Arizona's recruiting class of seven freshmen, three JC transfers and one Division I transfer trailed only North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida in terms of the rankings this year. The Tar Heels and Gamecocks tied for the top spot with the Gators coming in at No. 3. Stanford, ranked No. 8, was the only other Pac-10 school to appear in the top 10 by the publication this season.

Lopez, wh ohad a five-year contract extension approved by the Arizona Board of Regents last Thursday, and the Wildcats will open their fall camp three weeks from today on Oct. 13.
