Sept. 29, 2003
WALNUT CREEK, CA - California junior Mia Jerkov has been selected Pac-10 Volleyball Player of the Week for Sept. 22-28, conference Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. It is the second Pac-10 Player of the Week honor for Jerkov this season (Sept. 8) and the fourth Pac-10 Player of the Week honor all-time for Jerkov. It is the 17th Player of the Week honor for Cal Volleyball all-time.
A 6-3 outside hitter from Split, Croatia, Jerkov helped lead No. 9 ranked Cal to a sweep of the Washington schools last week at Haas Pavilion. Against Washington State on Sept. 25, she had a team-high 13 kills, four service aces and had 10 digs. In the victory over No. 13 Washington on Sept. 26, Jerkov had a team-high 30 kills and 10 digs. It was the eighth time in her college career she has had 30 or more kills in a match. For the two matches, she finished with 43 kills, 20 digs and six service aces.
Jerkov leads the Bears with 240 kills, 6.15 kills per game and 268.0 points, and is second on the team with 18 service aces, and 120 digs. By starting the 2003 season 12-0, Cal has not only broken a school-record for best season start (old record was nine set in 1989 and 2002), but has now broken a school-record for consecutive wins in any part of the season (old record was 11 set from Sept. 15-25, 1982).
The Bears will next travel to Arizona State, Friday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, and to Arizona, Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. at McKale Center in Tucson.
