Cal Women 9th, Men 10th at Notre Dame Invitational

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The California women's cross country team placed ninth with 239 points, and the men took 10th with 253 points at the 48th-annual Notre Dame Invitational Friday afternoon at the Burke Memorial Golf Course.
Sophomore Bridget Duffy finished ninth for the Golden Bears, which received votes in the coaches' poll this week, with a time of 17:51 over the 5000m course. The Oakland, Calif., product has led the Bears in three of her four races this season and eight of nine events since she arrived in Berkeley.
Nationally-No. 3 Notre Dame claimed the women's title with 73 points behind a one-two finish from Molly Huddle (17:12) and Lauren King (17:24). No. 6 Wake Forest placed second with 105 points, and No. 22 Penn State was third with 134 points.
Freshman Christy Borak was Cal's next fastest runner in 33rd (18:15), followed by junior Abby Parker in 53rd (18:38) and redshirt sophomore Maja Ruznic in 70th (18:54). Other results for the Bears included junior Lindsey Maclise in 80th (18:59) and freshmen Eva Markiewicz in 93rd (19:13) and Samantha Jones in 97th (19:18).
Junior Girmay Guangul led the Bears on the five-mile course with a sixth-place showing (24:43). Earlier this season, Guangul won the Strawberry Canyon Challenge Run in his only other competition. Senior Carlos Carballo also performed well for Cal today, finishing in 14th (24:58).
Cal freshman David Torrence placed 59th in 25:44 against the nationally-ranked field. Rounding out the finishers for the Bears were senior Jonathan Balzer in 84th (25:55), freshman Ozzie Pina in 96th (26:03), sophomore Eric Roberts in 112th (26:17), sophomore Abadir Barre in 145th (26:55), senior Tom Allen in 151st (27:04) and redshirt freshman Trevor Uyemura in 179th (28:06).
No. 17 Notre Dame won the men's title with 76 points, followed by Michigan with 92 points and No. 10 Eastern Michigan with 128.
Eastern Michigan's Gavin Thompson garnered first in the individual competition with a time of 24:06.
Cal sends selected athletes to the San Francisco State Invitational tomorrow.
