Cal Grabs Early Lead at Ihlanfeldt Invitational

Oct. 6, 2003

Seattle - California jumped out to an eight-stroke lead after the first round of play at the 22nd annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational at Sahalee Country Club. The fourth-ranked Golden Bears carded an opening round score of 3-under 285 while three-time defending tournament champion USC is in second place with a 5-over score of 293.

California was led by Sofie Andersson, who shot 3-under 69 to hold a one-stroke lead after 18 holes of play. Andersson's round included six birdies. She played the front nine in 34 and carded a 35 over the final nine holes.

Cal teammate Anna Temple is tied with USC's Irene Cho for second place at 2-under 70. The Trojans' Rachel Bell, UCLA's Susie Matthews and Long Beach State's Hayley Wilkinson are tied for fourth at 1-under 70. Arizona's Erica Blasberg, the tournament's top-ranked player at third overall in the latest Golfweek standings, is tied for 25th after opening play with a 4-over 76.

Cal's opening round score of 285 was three strokes better than the previous 18-hole score in the tournament's history. San Jose State shot 288 during the opening round of the 1995 event.

Washington is tied for 13th overall in the 15-team field. The Huskies shot 33-over 321. Washington was led by freshman Amber Prange who shot 6-over 78 during her first collegiate tournament. Ashley Bickerton, another freshman on the UW roster, carded an 8-over 80 while Paige Mackenzie shot 9-over 81. Sung Ea Lee and Lindsay Morgan both finished at 10-over 82. Morgan was 3-under after 11 holes of play before finding trouble on the back nine. She was 13-over between holes 12 and 17, including a nine on the par-3 17th hole.

The tournament marked the return of Mackenzie to the team after missing most of last season due to a back injury.

'It was great to see Pagie back playing a competitive round,' Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur said. 'But that was about it in terms of highlights. We did not have a good day and I expect to see that change tomorrow. Lindsay got off to a great start and it is unlike her to have that tough of a stretch during a round. I expect to see her bounce back tomorrow.'

The second round of play begins at 10:15 a.m. at Sahalee on Tuesday. The final round of competition will take place Wednesday starting at 8:30 a.m.
