Men's Golf in Ninth Place at Windon Memorial Classic
Oct. 6, 2003
TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team carded a 14-over par 576 total Monday and stands in ninth place after the opening two rounds of the Windon Memorial Classic at North Shore Country Club in Glenview, Ill.
For the second tournament in a row, shooting par has proven difficult for the Wildcats, as the team could muster just two rounds at even par over the day's 36 holes en route to a two-round total of 576 (+14). Arizona shot a four-over 292 in Monday's first round, its lowest opening-round score in three tournaments this season, but followed that with a 10-over 298 in the afternoon 18 holes. UA's tally is 19 strokes off the pace set by Minnesota, whose five-under 571 leads the 17-team event by three strokes. Illinois (574) and Purdue (577) round out the top three places.
Individually, Nathan Lashley leads Arizona with a two-round 145 (+1) tally and stands tied for 18th place. The junior from Scottsbluff, Neb., carded rounds of 73 and 72 to notch the second-lowest 36-hole total in a varsity appearance. Lashley is 10 strokes behind the tournament leader, Peter Richardson of Purdue, heading into Tuesday's final round.
Senior Chris Nallen continues to be near par, but has just one round at par or better in seven rounds this season. He is tied for 29th place at 147 (+5). Nallen has now tallied five consecutive over par rounds, one shy of his longest such streak during collegiate competition. Freshman Nathan Tyler collected an even-par round in the opening 18 with a 72, but closed the day with a 78 to tie for 44th place at 150 (+6).
Tuesday's final round is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. CDT at the par 72, 7,058-yard North Shore Coountry Club.
