Oct. 7, 2003
Eric Peterson's UCLA women's cross country 'B' team on Saturday (Oct. 11) will travel to San Diego to run in the Triton Classic. Hosted by UC San Diego, the races will be held on the UCSD North Campus Athletic Fields. The women's 6K event will start at 8:30 a.m. and the men's 8K competition begins at 9:30 a.m.
Competing for the Bruin women will be - juniors, Carolyn Shea (Waterville, ME) and Carmen Winant (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown Friends); sophomores, Sarah West (Davis), Ashley Allen (Pleasant Hill/College Park), Leslie Barrie (Torrance), Maribeth Buche (Yorba Linda/Esperanza) and Jenny Esser (Pleasanton/Foothill); redshirt freshman Emily Haigh (Santa Ana/Foothill) and freshman Mary Maleta (Santa Cruz/Soquel).
'This will be the last opportunity that I have to view both teams in a competitive situation prior to the Pre-National Invitational (at Northern Iowa/Oct. 18),' said Peterson, in his 10th season coaching the Bruin women. 'I have a good idea who will be representing us in Iowa, but we will definitely use this meet as a way to evaluate those athletes that are on the rise in our program.'
The Bruins trained through last weekend and did not have a competition. This week, the Bruin women's varsity is ranked No. 12 in the nation. Preseason rated No. 24, the Bruin women on Sept. 20 at the Big Wave Invitational (Honolulu, HI), won the 4K team title, beating No. 1 Brigham Young and on Sept. 27 at the Stanford Invitational, UCLA won the 6K team crown, beating No. 2 Stanford (last week, the Bruins were ranked No. 7 in the U. S.).
UCLA will join the nation's top ranked women and men's teams and will travel to the University of Northern Iowa for the 2003 Pre-National Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 18. The women (two seeded 6000m events) and men's (two seeded 8000m events) races will be held on the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course/Byrnes Park in Waterloo, IA. The race course will be a preview of the upcoming NCAA Championships, also hosted by Northern Iowa on Nov. 24.
