California Clings to One Shot Lead at Ihlanfeldt Invitational

Oct. 7, 2003

Seattle - California's hopes of running away with the 22nd-annual Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational championship ended during Tuesday's second round of play at Sahalee Country Club. After firing a tournament record 3-under 285 on Monday, Cal slipped back during the second-round with a 14-over 306 performance for a 36-hole total of 591. The Golden Bears own a slim one-stroke lead over Arizona and UCLA entering Wednesday's final 18 holes of play.

Arizona, behind the play of All-American Erica Blasberg, turned in the day's best performance, shooting 5-over 293 to move up from fourth place. UCLA scored 295 to tie the Wildcats for second place on the leaderboard.

USC, attempting to win its fourth consecutive Ihlanfeldt title, shot 308 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 601. The Trojans trail California by 10 strokes heading into the final round.

Blasberg shot 3-under 69 during the second round and is tied for third at 1-over 145 after starting the tournament with a 76. California's Anna Temple followed up her opening round 70 with an even-par 72 to lead the field at 2-under 142. UCLA's Susie Matthews is second at 144 followed by Blasberg and USC's Rachel Bell.

Cal's Sofie Andersson, who led the tournament after posting a 69 Monday, fell back to a tie for fifth after shooting 77 Tuesday.

Washington moved up four places in the team standings to ninth after shooting 12-over 300. The Huskies improved their team score by 21 strokes over their first-round effort. UW's second round score was the third best of the day for the 15-team field.

Husky freshman Amy Bickerton led Washinton with a 1-under score of 71. Her round, the second best score of the day, included six birdies. She finds herself tied for 15th at 7-over 151 after 36 holes.

Washington's Paige Mackenzie shot 2-over 74 and is 35th at 155. Amber Prange, who led Washington during the first round, carded a 3-over 75 and is 24th overall at 153. Lindsay Morgan shot 80 while Sung Ea Lee finished her second round with an 81.

Prange, a freshman, had the highlight of the day when she recorded an ace on the par-3, 155-yard 17th hole. She used a five iron on the hole.

'The freshmen did a great job for us today, shooting a combinded one-over between the two of them,' said Husky coach Mary Lou Mulflur. 'It was also good to see Paige improve today. I thought she hit the ball a lot crisper. Now we just need to get Lindsay and Sung going. I know they're capable of doing much better and I hope they show it Wednesday. We did a good job of moving up past some people. Hopefully we can continue that sort of play during the final round.'

The final round of play begins at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sahalee.
