Oct. 7, 2003

PACIFIC PALISADES, CALIF. - Washington's Claire Carter and Dea Sumantri competed in the qualifying rounds of the Riviera/ITA All-American Championships at the Riviera Tennis Club today, but were unable to advance to the second day of competition.

Carter, the top seed in the 64-player singles draw, picked up a win in her first round match, taking care of Suzana Maskovic of Denver in straight-sets, 7-5, 6-1. The tides turned in the second round, as Carter then fell in straight sets to Stanford's Story Tweedie-Yates, 6-0, 6-4.

Carter and Sumantri competed as a doubles pair, but lost their opening round match to Kelly Schmandt and Aleke Tsoubanos from Vanderbilt, 8-4.

Sumantri will still compete in the singles main draw of the ITA All-American Championships, beginning Thurs., Oct. 9, at the Riviera Tennis Club. The rest of the Husky women's tennis squad will head east to compete in the Harvard Fall Invitational this weekend.
