CARDINAL BEGIN DEFENSE OF PAC-10 TITLE
No. 3 Bruins, No. 9/No. 12 Huskies Meet in Westwood

Conference play kicks off this week for the 10th season of Pac-10 women's soccer, and the 2002 Pac-10 Champion STANFORD Cardinal begins defense of its league crown... The Cardinal was picked to finish first in the 2003 Conference race by the league coaches, receiving six first-place votes, while the UCLA Bruins - who enter the week with the best non-conference record in the Pac-10 - were picked to finish second, garnering the remaining four first-place votes... In the first week of round-robin play, the Washington schools travel to Los Angeles... Friday night's match in Westwood pits the Pac-10's highest ranked teams, No. 3 UCLA and No. 9/No. 12 WASHINGTON... Both the Bruins and Huskies have won two in a row... Stanford and No. 21/NR CALIFORNIA travel to the Arizona schools as ARIZONA STATE looks to protect a 3-0-1 home record... Traditional rivals OREGON and OREGON STATE meet Friday in Corvallis, Ore.

PAC-10 PLAYER OF THE WEEKvUCLA senior forward Sarah-Gayle Swanson has been named the Pac-10 Women's Soccer Player of the Week for Sept. 30-Oct. 6.

Swanson, from Denver, Colo., scored the game-winning goal with three seconds left in regulation as No. 3 UCLA escaped with a 1-0 road victory over UNLV Oct. 3 in Las Vegas. It was the fourth goal of the season for Swanson, who is tied for the team lead in goals and tied for sixth in the Pac-10.

UCLA (6-1-2 overall), ranked third in this week's NSCAA/Adidas and Soccer America polls, opens Pac-10 play at home this weekend, as No. 9/No. 12 Washington (7-2-2) and Washington State (4-6-0) visit Westwood, Calif.

This is Swanson's first Pac-10 Player of the Week honor and UCLA's ninth weekly honor all-time.

PAC-10 WOMEN'S SOCCER NOTES

ARIZONA: The Wildcats look to snap a three-game winless skid when the Bay Area teams visit Tucson this weekend... Arizona is coming off a stretch in which it played six of eight matches on the road... Seven of the squad's 10 matches have been decided by one goal or fewer... SO MF Mallory Miller is tied for third in the Pac-10 in goals (5) and points (12).

ARIZONA STATE: The Sun Devils tied San Diego State and fell 2-1 to San Diego over the weekend, snapping the team's six-game unbeaten streak... At SDSU, SO MF Brittany Cooper tallied her team-leading and career-high seventh goal of the season in the 73rd minute, nailing a free kick from 30 yards out... The Aztecs tied the game in the 87th minute... Cooper ranks second in the Pac-10 in goals (7) and points (17).

CALIFORNIA: In the midst of a six-game road trip, the Bears lost 1-0 to Missouri and defeated Marquette 2-0 to record their fifth shutout of the season... FR F Bri Wiles notched her first collegiate goal in the 82nd minute against the Golden Eagles... SR MF Kassie Doubrava posted an insurance goal in the 86th minute... FR GKAnna Key is tied for fifth in the Pac-10 with three shutouts.

OREGON: FR F Andrea Valdez scored an insurance goal in the Ducks' 3-2 win over Weber State and added a shot on goal in the 1-0 loss to No. 6 Portland... Oregon held the Pilots scoreless for 78 minutes... Valdez is tied for the team lead in assists (3), with one in each of the first three contests, and is second on the squad in points (5).

OREGON STATE: The Beavers defeated Weber State 4-0 and fell to No. 6 Portland 2-1... SO F Tessa Baker scored two goals over the weekend, notching Oregon State's first goal in the win over the Wildcats and posting the lone goal against the Pilots... Baker paces OSU, and is tied for fifth in the league, with 11 points on five goals and one assist.

STANFORD: The Cardinal fell to Loyola Marymount and Santa Clara in the Stanford/Nike Invitational... JR GK Nicole Barnhart is tied for the Pac-10 lead in shutouts (4) and ranks sixth in goals against average (0.80).

UCLA: SR F Sarah-Gayle Swanson scored with just three seconds left in regulation, as UCLA defeated UNLV 1-0 on Oct. 3... The Bruins outshot the Rebels 31-3... The goal was Swanson's fourth on the year, while SO F Iris Mora was credited with her fourth assist on the season.

USC: Playing without the services of SR F Jessica Edwards and key reserves SO MF Amy Mann (ankle sprain) and SO D Jenna Killion (flu)The Women of Troy fell 2-1 at BYU on Oct. 3... Edwards is out for three to four weeks with a fractured right leg... JR MF Kelly Blais notched USC's lone goal in the 54th minute... FR F Rosa Anna Tantillo paces the squad and is tied for third in the Pac-10 in both points (12) and goals (5).

WASHINGTON: The Huskies wrapped up a five-game homestand with shutout victories over Portland State and Idaho State... In the 5-0 win over the Vikings, SR F Melissa Bennett scored a goal and tied the UW record with her 27th career assist... In the 2-0 win over the Bengals, SR MF Blair Ruport assisted on the first goal and added an insurance goal... The shutouts were Washington's fourth and fifth of the year, and FR Kelsey Rasmussen earned her first collegiate start in goal against Idaho State... JR F Tina Frimpong paces the Conference in several offensive categories, including points (20), goals (9) and game-winning goals (4).

WASHINGTON STATE: SR F Nicole Wilcox netted both goals to lead Washington State to a 2-0 victory over Idaho State... SR F Rachel Rodrick and SR F Shelby Brownfield each posted an assist... Wilcox paces the team with 10 points on the season (3 goals/1 assist).
