ASU Women's Soccer Tops California 3-2
Oct. 10, 2003
TEMPE, Ariz. - The Arizona State (7-2-2; 1-0-0 Pac-10) women's soccer team came away with a hard fought 3-2 win over California (5-3-3; 0-1-0 Pac-10) on Friday night at Sun Devil Soccer Stadium thanks to two goals from Stephanie Ebner. The game appeared to be headed to overtime until Ebner netted the game-winner with two-and-a-half minutes to go. ASU now moves to 37-0 all time when they score three or more goals.
The Sun Devils jumped out to a 2-0 lead only to see Cal storm back into the game. The only score of the first half saw ASU's Elizabeth Bogus take a pass on the left wing from Brittany Cooper and glide past three Cal defenders before slotting a shot home from 10 yards out. That marks Bogus' fifth goal of the season, second most on the team behind Cooper.
Ebner, who had no goals coming into the game, doubled the Sun Devils' lead six minutes into the second half with a spectacular volley from outside of the penalty area following a scramble after a free kick. The lead lasted hardly a minute when the Golden Bears' Katie Ratican scored her first goal of the year for Cal off of an assist from Amy Willison, cutting the score to 2-1.
After a period of sustained pressure, Ratican turned provider in the 82nd minute when she slid the ball to teammate Kimberly Yokers, who unleashed a drive from 30 yards beyond the reach of ASU goalkeeper Kim Bingham, seeing her first action in the Sun Devil goal for her career.
As time was wearing down, Ebner scored a second long distance strike, this time taking a pass from Bogus and hitting a shot from 25 yards that beat the Bears' Anna Key for the game winner.
The Sun Devils are back in action on Sunday, October 12, at 1 p.m. at Sun Devil soccer stadium when they take on Pac-10 rival Stanford.
