Johan Berg Begins First Fall Tournament This Week

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Men's tennis junior Johan Berg begins fall competition this week at the qualifying rounds of the 2003 Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships. As the only Usc representative, Berg will play the qualifier this Thursday and Friday (Oct. 7-8) in the hopes of advancing tho the main draw to be played Oct. 11-12.
This year's event is being hosted for the second straight year at The Champions Club and sponsored by Chattem, Inc., a Chattanooga pharmaceutical firm that has chosen its Icy Hot product, a dual action topical pain reliever, as title sponsor. The Greater Chattanooga Sports and Events Committee administers the event.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships include six days of qualifying matches leading up to the Oct. 9-12 64-player, 32-doubles team main draw. 256-singles player and 128-doubles team prequalifying tournaments are played Oct. 3-6 which feed into 64-player and 32-doubles team qualifying tournaments October 7-8. The combined singles tournament fields can run over 350 players and a player who begins in prequalifying must win seven matches just to reach the main draw.
The Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championship, the largest single tournament in the country, offer the first national singles and doubles titles of the season, and are followed by the ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships in November and the the season-ending NCAA Championships in May (the women's counterpart to the Icy Hot/ITA Men's All-American Championships, the Riviera Women's All-American Championships, is hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club in Pacific Palisades).
