Men's and Women's Cross Country Place Second at ASU Invite

TEMPE, Ariz. - The University of Arizona's men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Arizona State University Invitational on Friday, October 10. The Arizona State Sun Devils played host to six major universities and six area junior colleges. Both the men's and women's squads posted second-place team finishes behind Arizona State. The men scored 37 points behind the Sun Devils' 22 points. On the women's side, the Wildcats scored 65 points to Arizona State's 16 points.
Freshman Robert Cheseret took the men's individual title for the Wildcats. Cheseret covered the 8,000-meter course in 23:59.3, finishing 20 seconds ahead of the rest of the field. The win was Cheseret's second in three meets. Senior Kyle Goklish was the second Wildcat to cross the finish line. Goklish claimed fifth place in 24:41.8.
Seniors Eric Bohn and Matt McInvale finished eighth and ninth, respectively. Bohn was clocked at 25:01.8, while McInvale crossed the line at 25:04.3. Rounding out the five scoring runners was sophomore Jin Daikoku. Daikoku finished 15th in 25:52.5.
The men's squad was also supplemented by the efforts of junior Mike Howard (17th, 26:01.8), freshman Ryan Ludwig (19th, 26:16.8), freshman Kenny Frank (24th, 26:29.6) and freshman Eric Chavez (31st, 26:51.7).
For the Wildcat women, junior Beth Hoge was the top finisher. Hoge completed the 5,000-meter race in 17:59.3 to finish sixth overall and break up a sweep of the top five scoring positions by Arizona State. Sophomore Michi Hirakawa-Wong was the second Wildcat to finish. Hirakawa-Wong was 13th with a time of 18:42.1.
Junior Nicole Gurnicz led a quartet of consecutive Wildcat finishers. Gurnicz was 17th overall, finishing with a time of 19:00.9. She was followed by freshman Ashley Ippolito in 18th place and a time of 19:01.6. Next to cross the line was sophomore Jenn Ford in 19th place, clocking a time of 19:04.3. Rounding out the pack was freshman Karen Langdorf in 20th place with a time of 19:05.6.
Next up on the schedule for the Wildcats will be the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Waterloo, Iowa. The squads were originally scheduled to travel to Fayetteville, Ark. for the Chili Pepper Invitational, but a midseason schedule change will send the Wildcats to Iowa instead.
