Oct. 11, 2003
CORVALLIS, Ore. - Amanda Eggert hit .552 with 17 kills for Oregon State, but the Beaver volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 13 Washington on Saturday night. Game scores were 30-19, 23-30, 30-24 and 30-27.
The Beavers (12-7, 2-5 Pacific-10) hit .251 for the match, good for their second-best hitting percentage in a Pac-10 match this year. In addition to Eggert's season-high .552 performance, two other Beavers hit .394 or better. Anne Watts-Roberts hit .394 with 15 kills, and Michelle Franz hit .500 with a career-best seven kills. Laura Collins dished out 58 assists as OSU finished with 66 kills, the most by the team in a Pac-10 match this year.
'We played hard. We played better as the match went on,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'Washington's a darn good team, and our defense made a turnaround as the match went on. The speed of their offense had our defense reeling at first, but we hung in there and by the end we were winning the long rallies.'
Washington (13-4, 4-4) outdug the Beavers 78-68, led by Candace Lee's 25, but OSU had another solid defensive performance. Karah Rhoades had a career-high 18 digs, bettering her previous best of 16 against the Huskies last season. K.C. Frederic added 14 for her fourth straight double-figure performance. Allison Lawrence tacked on 13 digs to go along with 17 kills to pick up another double-double.
The Huskies hit .312, with Brie Hagerty's 20 kills on .302 hitting leading the way. Sanja Tomasevic, the Pac-10's leading scorer, finished with 18 kills.
The match will air on FOX Sports Northwest at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 12.
