UCLA Women's 'B' Team Wins Triton Cross Country Classic
Oct. 11, 2003
SAN DIEGO - Eric Peterson's UCLA women and men's cross country 'B' squads on Saturday (Oct. 11) won the team titles at the Triton Classic, hosted by UC San Diego on the school's north campus athletic fields.
Individually, the UCLA women were led by junior Carmen Winant (Philadelphia, PA/Germantown Friends), who placed fourth (22:42.5) in the Div. I 6K event and the Bruin men were paced by junior Jon Rankin (Spring Valley/Monte Vista), who won (25:26.3) the Div. I 8K race.
UCLA's 'B' squad won the Div. I 6K team title with 47 points, ahead of second-place UC Irvine (48), third-place San Diego State (69), fourth-place USC (94) and fifth-place Pepperdine (131).
Along with Winant, the Bruins had two other runners in the Top 10 - sophomore Sarah West (Davis), who placed fifth (22:49.4) and redshirt freshman Emily Haigh (Santa Ana/Foothill), who was 10th (23:15.8).
'Carmen (Winant) and Sarah (West) both did a good job today in leading our team to victory and overcoming a strong team effort from UC Irvine,' said Peterson, in his 10th season coaching the Bruin women. 'Sarah went out aggressively and looked strong during the early and middle stages of the race. Carmen went out more conservatively and came on strong at the end and led our squad to the team win. This effort represents the depth of our team at the Nos. 5-6-7-and-8 spots and it's nice to see us maintain a level of consistency that will help us in the postseason.'
In the first major meet of the 2003 campaign featuring the nation's top teams at full strength, the No. 12 UCLA women's varsity and the Bruin men's varsity squads, on Oct. 18 at Waterloo, IA, will run in the 2003 Pre-National Cross Country meet, hosted by Northern Iowa. The women (two seeded 6000m races) and men's (two seeded 8000m races) courses, on the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course/Byrnes Park, are a preview of the upcoming 2003 NCAA Championships, hosted on the same courses on Nov. 24 at Waterloo, IA.
