Oct. 12, 2003
BERKELEY, Calif. - - Alan Gordon scored his ninth goal of the season as the OSU men's soccer team upset No. 22 California 2-0 Sunday afternoon at Edwards Stadium. With their third straight Pacific-10 victory, the Beavers improve their record to 9-4-0 (3-1-0 Pac-10), while the Golden Bears drop to 5-5-2 (1-1-1).
Carlos Cornejo started the scoring in the 26th minute when he sent the ball into the left corner of the net off a pass from Gordon. Cornejo's goal was his second of the season and his second this weekend.
'Boku (Cornejo) is a very gifted attacking player and has been coming on in the last few weeks,' OSU coach Dana Taylor said of the freshman midfielder. 'The one aspect he needed to work on in order to see consistent time in the lineup was his defending. He's put in a lot of hard work and is coming along. Now, he can play on both sides of the ball and utilize his attacking skills.'
Gordon added to the Beaver lead in the 80th minute with an assist by Ryan Johnson. Johnson sent a pass to Gordon, who then sent the ball past Golden Bear goalkeeper Mike Oseguera for the goal. Gordon's three points today move him up to third on the Beavers career points list with 55.
Johnson, who leads the nation in assists with 12, is now the Beavers' career assists leader with 17.
Peter Billmeyer recorded his third straight shutout and improved his career-leading shutout record to 15.
'I'm proud of the way the guys were professional in their approach to the games this weekend,' Taylor said. 'Now, we need to start focusing on what we need to do against a nationally-ranked opponent (No. 8 Washington) coming in Sunday.
'You can't blink in the Pac-10. A lot of times when you go on the road in this conference, to get a result once is amazing - the majority of times, the home team wins. To come away from the Bay Area with two wins is extremely important. I'm proud of the way we defended from the top all the way to the back - the entire team put in a full effort.''
With shutout wins over Fresno State, Stanford and California, the Beavers three-game shutout streak is their first since 1998.
The Beavers return home next week when they take on Northwest rival No. 8 Washington on Sunday, Oct. 19th at 1 p.m.
