Andrew Walter Named Pac-10 Offensive Player Of The Week

Oct. 13, 2003

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Arizona State quarterback Andrew Walter has been named the Bank of America Higher Standards Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Week. End Kenechi Udeze of USC and punter Chris Kluwe of UCLA earned the defensive and special teams honors respectively.

Walter, a junior from Grand Junction, Colo., directed Arizona State to a 59-14 win against Oregon. Walter completed 18 of 28 passes (.643) for 316 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. Arizona State put up 497 yards total offense and converted 11-of-15 third downs. The Sun Devils scored on every possession in the second half with a field goal and five touchdowns for 38 points.

Udeze, a junior from Los Angeles, Calif., made the big plays on defense in USC's 44-21 win against Stanford. Udeze had four tackles, all solo, including three quarterback sacks (-22), forced two fumbles, each setting up a field goal, and blocked a field goal attempt. The USC defense limited Stanford to 242 yards total offense (86 rushing, 156 passing) and forced four turnovers.

Kluwe, a junior from Seal Beach, Calif., punted just two times in UCLA's 24-21 win at Arizona, but both were downed inside the 20-yard line. He averaged 41.0 yards on the kicks, with his final punt pinning Arizona on its own one-yard line with just over a minute left in the game allowing the Bruins to preserve the win.

Others nominated for offensive player of the week honors were receivers Mike Williams of USC and Craig Bragg of UCLA and running back Clarence Farmer of Arizona. Also nominated on defense were tackle Rodney Leisle of UCLA and safties Riccardo Stewart of Arizona State and Marcus Hollingsworth of Arizona. Kicker Ryan Killeen of USC was nominated for special teams play.
