Men's Golf Takes Seventh At Alister MacKenzie Invitational

Oct. 14, 2003

Fairfax, Calif. - The Stanford men's golf team shot a final round of 291 to bring their three-round total to 852 and finished seventh overall at the second annual Alister MacKenzie Invitational at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif. California won the tournament turning in a score of 833, followed by Northwestern (835) and UCLA (835) who tied for second. Rounding out the top five are Oregon State (845) and San Jose State (847).

Steve Conway, from UCLA, took top medalist honors after firing a 13-under par 200 for the tourney. Cal's Scott Carlyle, Northwesterns' Bryson Young and Illinois' Joe Affrunti tied for second with a 206. Three players also tied for fifth just a stroke behind.

The Cardinal was led by sophomore Kyle Gentry (Carmel, CA) who shot a one-under par 212 (68-70-74). Teammate Kevin Blue (Don Mills, Ontario, Canada) tied for 20th with an even-par 213 (73-68-72) while Blake Mastalir and Zack Miller tied for 31st overall with a 215. Freshman Matt Shin placed 72nd with a 226.

Conditions were ideal in the morning at the Meadow Club with little wind and temperatures rising to the low 80's and Cal capitalized. Despite the courses straightforward setup, many players commented on how difficult these old greens were to read. The Meadow Club was founded in 1927 and as a course on the short side (6583-yards), its difficulty lies in the size of the greens. Finding the green in regulation does not necessarily translate into birdie opportunities because of the length of putts and severe amounts of break.

Stanford is back in action next week as they host The Nelson at the Stanford Golf Course.
