Beavers Upset No. 10 Huskies 2-0 In Seattle
Oct. 17, 2003
SEATTLE, Wash. - -
A goal and assist from Tessa Baker and solid defense by the Oregon State women's soccer team lifted the Beavers to a 2-0 upset over No. 10 Washington Friday night in Pacific-10 action.
OSU beat Washington (7-4-3, 0-2-1) for the first time since 1994. The win was OSU's first against a ranked opponent since toppling No. 3 UCLA 2-1 in 2001.
OSU (5-7-1 overall, 1-1-0 Pac-10) did all of its scoring early in the first half, taking a 1-0 lead on a Stacey Mescher score in the fourth minute off a pass from Baker.
Baker's header gave the Beavers a 2-0 advantage in the 13th minute courtesy of a pinpoint cross from Lindsey Beem from the right side.
OSU's defense clamped down on the Huskies the rest of the way and Beaver goalie Melissa Onstad recorded her fourth shutout of the year while making six saves.
'We played very, very well tonight,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'We got up 2-0 early in the first half and gave a great display of composed soccer throughout the game. We defended very well, and Melissa Onstad took several crosses away from Washington. This was a very put-together, composed performance by the entire team.'
Fennah commented that his team's play was similar to previous games, but composure was the key to Friday's victory.
'This is a very exciting performance. The kids have stayed positive and they deserved this win,' the sixth-year head coach said. 'They took some chances and played well - we played like we have all year, we just had more composure tonight.'
Baker's goal was her eighth of the year, moving her into a tie for seventh on OSU's all-time season goals list. She has 18 points for the season to rank among the Pac-10 leaders.
OSU travels to Pullman to take on Washington State Sunday at noon before returning home to host California Friday at 3 p.m.
