Early Goals Lift OSU Over 13th-Ranked UW Women
Oct. 17, 2003
SEATTLE - Tessa Baker assisted on the first goal and scored the second inside the opening 13 minutes for Oregon State which upset 13th-ranked Washington 2-0 in a Pacific-10 Conference women's soccer contest at Husky Soccer Field.
The Beavers (5-7-1) improved to 1-1 in Pac-10 play with their first win over Washington since 1994. The Huskies (7-4-3) had won the last nine games with OSU, including all five previous meetings in Seattle. UW remained winless in conference play with an 0-2-1 Pac-10 ledger.
Oregon State capitalized on two of its first three shots and maintained a defensive posture the rest of the game.
Stacey Mescher opened the scoring at 3:17 with her third goal of the season. Mescher received a through ball from Baker and dribbled to the left past goalkeeper Lisa Brookens before slipping an eight-yard shot into the open goal.
Baker netted her team-leading eighth goal at 12:56 on a 10-yard header from the left side of the goal. Lindsey Beem was credited with an assist on the play after finding Baker with a lofting cross from the right flank. The 2-0 deficit marked the first time all season that Washington trailed by more than one goal.
The Beavers attempted only one shot the rest of the way and were outshot by a 25-4 margin. Despite the large shooting advantage, the Huskies were unable to put any past OSU goalkeeper Melissa Onstad who registered six saves en route to her fourth shutout.
Brookens did not record a save while playing the first half in goal for the Huskies. Freshman goalkeeper Kelsey Rasmussen played the second half for UW and did not face any shots.
This was the Huskies' first loss this season against an unranked opponent. UW suffered one-goal setbacks versus top-ranked North Carolina, No. 3 UCLA and No. 4 Portland, the defending national champion.
The Washington women entertain Oregon, Sunday (Oct. 19) at noon.
