Arizona State Edges Oregon State In Five Games

Amanda Eggert and Anne Watts-Roberts had 16 kills apiece, but the Oregon State volleball team dropped a 3-2 decision to Arizona State on Saturday night. Game scores were 29-31, 30-16, 27-30, 30-25 and 15-13.
'We blew a 10-6 lead in game five, and that was a bummer, but we fought hard,' said coach Nancy Somera. 'We just have to be resilient. Nobody said playing in this conference was easy. The weekend didn't go the way we wanted it to, but we'll move on.'
Oregon State (12-9, 2-7 Pac-10) broke away from a 6-6 tie in game five to go up 10-6, but the Sun Devils put together a four-point run of their own to retie the game. OSU regained the lead on an ASU service error, but the Sun Devils responded with four consecutive points and eventually won the game and the match.
Eggert hit .464 to lead the Beaver offense, which finished the night with 64 kills on .238 hitting. Karah Rhoades had 13 kills to join Eggert and Watts-Roberts in double-figures. Juliana Escobar led ASU with 22 kills on .340 hitting, as the Sun Devils (8-10, 3-6) hit .280 with 82 kills.
K.C. Frederic had a season-high 21 digs to lead the OSU defense, which finished with 63 digs. Allison Lawrence, who played only in the back row on Saturday, added 13 digs, and Laura Collins chipped in 10. Courtney Blocher had a team-best 22 of ASU's 76 digs.
For the second night in a row, the Beavers outblocked their opponent. OSU had a season-high 15 blocks, while ASU had seven. Collins led OSU with a career-high six blocks, while Eggert and Watts-Roberts had five apiece. Brittany Cahoon and Michelle Franz each had four.
