Cal Men 22nd, Women 29th at NCAA Pre-National Meet

WATERLOO, Iowa - The California men's and women's cross country teams had a tough time Saturday against a national-caliber field at the NCAA Pre-National Meet at the Warren Memorial Golf Course. Due to the number of teams competing, two races were staged for both the men's and women's competition.
The Cal men's team finished 22nd in the gold team competition with 503 points, while Colorado claimed top honors with 109 points. Northern Arizona took second with 114 points, while Ohio State was third with 141 points.
Junior Girmay Guangul led the Bears by placing 32nd in a time of 24:14 over the 8000m course. Senior Carlos Carballo was the next fastest Cal runner in 82nd place (24:55), followed by sophomore Giliat Ghebray in 94th (25:00).
Colorado's Dathan Ritzenhein posted the top time (23:17.7) in the gold race, just ahead of Arizona's Robert Cheseret (23:19.6).
The Cal women, who didn't have the services of its No. 2 runner Christy Borak, finished in 29th place with 731 points in the purple 6000m race. Borak is recovering from being hit by a car on her bicycle in the beginning of October. BYU took top honors with 86 points, followed by North Carolina with 99 points and Notre Dame with 127 points.
The Tar Heels' Shalane Flanagan won the individual competition in a time of 19:29.5. Sophomore Bridget Duffy paced the Bears in 51st place in 21:29.2. Freshman Eva Markiewicz was the next Cal runner to cross the finish line in 151st (22:49.7).
In the women's open heat, redshirt freshmen Elizabeth Mayeda placed 89th in 24:53, and Lisa Sandoval placed in 104th place (27:15.5) for Cal. Bears' senior Tom Allen finished 51st in the men's open heat in 26:17 and sophomores Eric Roberts and Abadir Barre took 66th (26:42.5) and 93rd (27:49.4), respectively.
Next up for the Bears is the Shoreline Open on Saturday, Oct. 25, in Mountain View, Calif.
