Cross Country Shows Prowess at NCAA Pre-Nationals

WATERLOO, Iowa - The University of Arizona's men's and women's cross country teams traveled to Iowa for the NCAA Pre-Nationals, hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. The meet was held at the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course on Saturday. Both Wildcats squads showed a lot of strength and determination, with the men finishing fifth in their race and the women 19th in theirs.
The Wildcat men continue to make their case for consideration as one of the nation's top teams. The squad finished fifth in the Gold race on Saturday with 202 points. Freshman Robert Cheseret led the way for the men, finishing second in 23:19.6. Cheseret finished less than two seconds behind Dathan Ritzenhein of Colorado. He continues to cement himself as one of the top runners in the nation and one to watch for as the NCAA Championships approach.
The second Wildcat to cross the line for the men's team was junior Jonah Maiyo. Maiyo covered the 8,000-meter course in 23:50.0 to claim ninth place overall. Senior Kyle Goklish claimed the No. 3 spot for the UA men. Goklish finished 24th overall in 24:08.0. Seniors Eric Bohn and Matt McInvale rounded out the top five for the Wildcats. Bohn finished 83rd in 24:54.6, while McInvale crossed the line at 24:56.9 for 88th place.
In the men's open race, the Wildcats had three freshmen competing. Eric Chavez finished 18th in 25:26.4. Kenny Frank was the next Wildcat across the line, finishing 36th in 25:57.1. Ryan Ludwig clocked a time of 26:48.2 for 70th place.
The Wildcat women also made some strides at Pre-Nationals. The women's squad finished 19th in the team standings of the Purple race with 521 points. Junior Beth Hoge was the top finisher, claiming 68th place on the 6,000-meter course. She finished with a time of 21:44.9.
Sophomore Adrienne Goeller finished 94th overall as the second finisher. Goeller clocked a time of 22:01.5. Senior Nicole Gurnicz wasn't too far behind, crossing the line at 22:05.4 in 100th place. Sophomore Michi Hirakawa-Wong was 119th overall with a time of 22:16.7. Rounding out the scoring for Arizona was sophomore Amber Steen. Steen finished 140th in 22:39.6.
Sophomore Jenn Ford finished 155th in 22:52.4 as the No. 6 finisher for the women. Freshman Karen Langdorf placed 163rd in 22:59.3 as the Wildcats' No. 7 runner.
In the women's open race, sophomore Robin Tierney was 46th in 23:04.7.
