UCLA Women Place 5th in 6000m Heat at Pre-Nationals, Flores Finishes Eighth

WATERLOO, IOWA - Eric Peterson's UCLA women's and men's cross country teams on Saturday (Oct. 18) ran in the Pre-National meet hosted by Northern Iowa University. The 6000m/8000m races were run on the Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course in Waterloo, IA. Attracting the nation's top women's and men's teams, the course is also the site for the upcoming 2003 NCAA Cross Country Championships on Monday, Nov. 24.

UCLA Women
There were two seeded 6000m races and the Bruins ran in the Gold Race. UCLA, ranked No. 12 in the U. S., placed fifth with 173 points. No. 2 Stanford won the Gold Race (33 teams) with 66 points, followed by No. 6 North Carolina State (101), No. 7 Colorado (148), No. 15 Wake Forest (163) and UCLA. The Bruins were led by senior Valerie Flores, who placed eighth in the 6000m Gold Race in a time of 20:31. UCLA had two other runners in the Top 30, freshman Alison Costello (24th, 21:03) and redshirt freshman Ashley Caldwell (26th, 21:06). The winner of the Gold Race was Stanford's Alicia Craig (19:52.6).

UCLA Men
There were two seeded 8000m races and the Bruins ran in the Purple Race. UCLA finished 17th, with 443 points. The team winner (35 teams) of the Purple Race was No. 1 Stanford (25), followed by No. 10 Iona (95), No. 13 Michigan (148), Air Force (196) and No. 18 Villanova (204). The Bruins were led by freshman Austin Ramos, who placed 41st, in a time of 24.20. Also placing in the Top 55 for UCLA was junior Jon Rankin (54th, 24:29). The individual winner of the Purple Race was Brigham Young's Kipi Kangogo (23:09.8).

Looking Ahead
The Bruins will compete on Friday, Oct. 24 in the CS Fullerton Invite at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea.
