Cardinal Remain in Consolation Action at ITA Regional Championship

EUGENE, Oreg. - Stanford junior Sam Warburg, seeded No. 2, retired due to illness in the second set of the semifinals of the men's singles draw at the West Coast ITA Regional on Sunday. The championship title was then awarded to No. 6-seed Alex Slovic of Washington 6-1, 4-4 ret (inj.).
After a bye in the first round, Warburg downed Washington's Nick Weiss 6-1, 6-2. The Stanford junior advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Jake Leivant of Cal. Leviant retired due to injury in the second set to give Warburg the win 6-3, 4-0 ret (inj.). Warburg faced Cal's seventh-seeded Wayne Wong in the quarterfinals and took the victory in three sets 6-4, 4-6, 6-3 before retiring in semifinal competition.
Warburg was partnered with Carter Morris in doubles action, but the pair was forced to withdraw the quarterfinal match due to Warburg's illness. The Stanford duo defeated Washington's Scott Felsenthal and Michael Ricks 8-1 in the round of 16.
Sophomore James Pade, seeded No. 5, advanced after defeating Patrick Briaud of Cal 6-1, 6-4. Pade next faced Cal's No. 9-seed Tyler Browne and took the match in three sets 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. In the quarterfinals, Pade fell to ninth-seeded Christoph Palmanshofer of Washington 6-3, 6-2 to drop out of competition.
Stanford freshman James Wan downed No. 9-seed Andre Sion of St. Mary's 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 32, then fell to No. 6 Alex Slovic of Washington in the quarterfinals 7-5, 6-1.
Cardinal junior Phil Sheng fell to Oregon's No. 9-seed Sven Swinnen 6-4, 6-2 in the round of 32.
In consolation competition, senior Joe Kao advanced to the semifinals on Monday after two bye rounds and two wins in earlier matches. Kao downed Santa Clara's Francisco Zepponi 6-3, 7-6 (2). In the consolation quarterfinals, Kao beat Michael Ricks of Washington 7-5, 7-5. Kao will face Chris Floyd of Washington in the consolation bracket semifinals.
Stanford's Chris Rasmussen downed Reid Arthur of Gonzaga 6-2, 6-3 in first-round consolation action. After a bye in the second round, the Cardinal freshman took the win against Adam Fauvre of St. Mary's in the third round 6-7, 6-3 (10). Rassmussen fell to Washington's Floyd 6-2, 4-6 (9) in the quarterfinal consolation match.
Redshirt junior Carter Morris advanced to the semifinals in men's singles consolation after three wins. The Cardinal downed Bobby Rasmussen of Santa Clara 6-2, 6-3, defeated Oregon's Chris King 6-2, 6-3 and took the win against Andreas Peterson of Cal 7-6, 6-1. Morris will face Washington's Scott Felsenthal in semifinal action on Monday.
