Joy's Goal Gives OSU A 1-1 Draw At Washington State

Oct. 19, 2003

PULLMAN, Wash. - -

The Oregon State women's soccer team (5-7-2 overall, 1-1-1 Pacific-10) played to a 1-1 double-overtime standstill at Washington State Sunday afternoon as both teams scored within 35 seconds of each other in the 73rd minute.

Janelle Joy scored her third goal of the year unassisted at 72:02 to give OSU a brief 1-0 lead.

The Cougars' (5-8-1, 1-2-1) Nicole Wilcox answered at 72:37 to make it 1-1 when she followed a Kim Morgan shot that was blocked but not controlled by OSU keeper Melissa Onstad.

Onstad, the Pac-10 saves leader, made eight saves in the game, including one in each overtime period.

'This was a great college soccer game,' OSU coach Steve Fennah said. 'I thought we came out flat in the first half and WSU came out firing, and we just hung on.

'I was proud of the way we changed the game in the second half though. Lindsey Beem turned in an awesome performance from end to end, and our strikers looked very dangerous.'

Despite a 23-7 shot advantage at halftime for the Cougars, the teams went to the break scoreless. In all, WSU outshot the Beavers 30-9, but the OSU defense allowed only nine of those to be put on goal.

The result continues the trend of tight games between the schools; the teams are now 6-6-2 in the all-time series. Five of the last six meetings have gone to overtime and two have ended in draws. WSU won last year's match 1-0 in double overtime.

OSU went 1-0-1 this weekend after upsetting No. 10 Washington 2-0 Friday night.

'Overall, I'm very pleased with the weekend,' Fennah said. 'Now we're excited to come home for a pair of big games against the Bay Area schools.'

OSU hosts California at 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, and takes on Stanford at 1 p.m. Oct. 26.
