Washington's Frederick, and UCLA's Chillar and Havner Named Pac-10 Players of the Week

FREDERICK, CHILLAR, HAVNER NAMED BANK OF AMERICA HIGHER STANDARDSPAC-10 FOOTBALL PLAYERS OF WEEK

WALNUT CREEK, Calif.--Wide Receiver Charles Frederick of Washington and UCLA linebackers Brandon Chillar and Spencer Havner have been named Bank of America Higher Standards Pac-10 Football Players of the Week.

Frederick, a junior from Lake Worth, Fla., had a record-setting day in Washington's 38-17 upset win at No. 22-ranked Oregon State. Frederick and nine receptions for 216 yards (24.0-yard average), including two touchdown receptions covering 35 and 87 yards. In addition, he returned a punt 86 yards for a touchdown to finish the game with a Washington-record 371 all-purpose yards. He surpassed the school record of 362 yards set in 1950 by the legendary Hugh McElhenny and was just eight yards shy of the Pac-10 record.

Linebacking mates Chillar and Havner played key roles in UCLA's 23-20 overtime win against California.

Chillar, a senior from Carlsbad, Calif., had a game-high 12 tackles, eight solo, and returned a blocked field goal 65 yards for a touchdown. The UCLA defense limited Cal to 4-of-16 third-down conversions and posted five quarterback sacks (-29 yards).

Havner, a sophomore from Nevada City, Calif., blocked two California field goal attempts, one of which was returned by Chillar 65 yards for UCLA's final touchdown of the game.

Others nominated for offensive player of the week honors quarterbacks Matt Leinart of USC and Matt Kegel of Washington State and wide receiver Derek Hagan of Arizona State. Also nominated on defense were linebackers Melvin Simmons of USC, Greg Carothers of Washington and Don Jackson of Washington State, safety Riccardo Stewart of Arizona State and end Monte Parson of California. Kicker Ryan Killeen of USC and return men Frederick of Washington and Sammy Moore of Washington State were nominated for special teams play.
