San Jose State at Oregon State; Stevens Natatorium(located in Dixon Recreation Center); 11 a.m.

Oregon State will make one of its rare home appearances of the 2003-04 women's swimming season this Saturday when the Beavers play host to San Jose State in a non-league dual meet. Competition begins at 11 a.m. in Stevens Natatorium, which is located in Dixon Recreation Center.

Five-time All-American Birte Steven and the rest of the Beavers (0-2 overall, 0-1 Pacific-10) will swim at home just twice this season. After Saturday's meet against SJSU (0-2, 0-1 Big West), OSU doesn't have another home meet until wrapping up the regular season against Washington on Feb. 7.

A win would give OSU a five-meet winning streak in home duals; that would be the longest home streak for the Beavers since they won eight in a row over the 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons.

Where the Beavers swim isn't as important as how they swim, though.

'I'm not sure the location of the meet matters,' head coach Larry Liebowitz said. 'I think the girls are just excited to swim and prepare for each meet ahead.'

Steven has earned All-America honors in each of her first three seasons at Oregon State, the first Beaver swimmer to do so. The senior can add to her career win total of 75 event victories; she needs to reach 104 to tie former teammate Naya Higashijima on the school's list of Pac-10 era leaders.

Junior Kristin Huston could move into OSU's top five for Pac-10-era wins with one victory; she's currently tied for sixth with 31 wins.

The Beavers opened their season on Oct. 10, swimming a double dual against California-Santa Barbara and UCLA. OSU was edged 132-128 by the Gauchos and beaten 148-108 by the Bruins; Oregon State won eight of 14 events against UCSB but will be looking to pick up more scorers this weekend.

Toward that end, OSU may shuffle its lineup from the season-opener. And and Liebowitz - who will be coaching his first meet at Stevens Natatorium - is looking for improved performance despite some tough practices recently.

'The exhaustion level is higher this week,' Liebowitz said. 'We've been swimming harder in preparation, but I expect some faster times.'

The Spartans will also look to earn their first dual meet victory of the season, after falling to Nevada 181-101 and Washington State 163-97 in a double dual at home on Oct. 17. Lura Wilhelm gathered three wins in the 100 and 200 butterflies and the 200 individual medley. SJSU's Brooke Wells won the 1,000 freestyle over both the Wolfpack and the Cougars.

OREGON STATE-SAN JOSE STATE SERIES: Oregon State has an all-time record of 12-1 against San Jose State in a dual meet series dating back to 1993, and the Beavers have won the past 6 meetings. Last season, OSU won 165-118 in San Jose; the last meeting in Corvallis was Oregon State's 99-87 victory in 2002. The Spartans' lone win in the series came in 1997 by a 143-133 score in San Jose.

OREGON STATE'S LAST MEET: Birte Steven earned 4 victories as Oregon State opened its women's swimming season Oct. 17 with a double-dual meet at California-Santa Barbara. The Beavers were edged 132-128 by UCSB and fell to UCLA 148-108; Steven won the 100-yard and 200-yard breaststrokes against both the Gauchos and the Bruins.

OSU got 2 wins against the Gauchos from Kristin Huston in the 100 and 200 freestyles and 2 more from Christina Kinney in the 100 and 200 butterflies. The Beavers also picked up victories against UCSB from freshman Sandy Hong in the 1,000 freestyle and in the 400 freestyle relay to win 8 of the 14 events in that dual.

'I thought they did a great job today,' said Larry Liebowitz, who made his head coaching debut at Oregon State. 'They swam really well; we had some career dual-meet bests and Birte made the B qualifying standard in both the 100 and 200 breaststrokes - that's a great swim.'

Swimmers meeting the 'A' standard earn automatic entry into the NCAA Championships; swimmers meeting the 'B' standard will be considered for inclusion in the NCAAs.

OSU also picked up wins against UCLA from Huston in the 200 freestyle, Monika Miroslaw in the 400 individual medley, Ausra Pacebutaite in the 100 backstroke and in the 400 freestyle relay.

'They raced really solid and were very supportive of each other,' Liebowitz said. 'I thought it was a very good start to the season.'

HEAD COACH Larry Liebowitz: Liebowitz, who has extensive international and club coaching experience, spent the last 8 seasons as assistant head coach for the women's and men's programs at Southern California. This season is his first as a collegiate head coach.

Last season, Liebowitz helped guide the USC women to third-place finishes in the NCAA Championships and the Pacific-10 Championships. The Trojan men's team was third in the Pac-10 and fifth at the NCAAs.

Liebowitz, 53, served as an assistant coach for the U.S. men's team at the 1999 Pan American Games and was also an assistant coach at the 1997 World University Games. He was coach of the United States men's team in the 1995 Pan Am Games and coach of the 1988 Costa Rica Olympic team.

SENIOR ALL-AMERICAN Birte Steven: Birte Steven is one of the most-decorated swimmers in Oregon State history, and she's looking to add to her accomplishments in her final season at OSU. The senior has earned All-America honors in each of her first 3 seasons with the Beavers and has a total of 5 All-America finishes; she's the only OSU swimmer to have reached those numbers.

Steven earned 2 All-America honors at the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive year in 2002-03, placing sixth in the 200 breaststroke and 11th in the 100 breaststroke. Steven's sixth-place finish was the best-ever for an OSU swimmer at the NCAAs.

In 2002, Steven became the first-ever OSU swimmer to earn All-America honors twice in the same meet with her 16th-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke and her 11th-place finish in the 200 breaststroke at the 2002 NCAAs. As a freshman in 2001, she placed 16th at the NCAAs in the 200 breastroke.

Steven has 75 first-place finishes in dual meet and invitational competition in her career at OSU, including 28 wins last season. In the Pac-10 era, she trails only Naya Higashijima on OSU's win list; Higashijima had 104 wins from 2000-2003.

This past May, Steven qualified for the University World Games as a member of the German National Team. Steven competed in the 100- and 200-meter breaststrokes at the Games, and her time in the 200 breaststroke was the eight-best in the world this year.

Steven was honored as the OSU Female Athlete of the Year for 2002-03 sschool year at the OSU athletic department's annual Benny Awards in June.

STEVENS NATATORIUM: Oregon State swims its home meets at Stevens Natatorium on the OSU campus. The Beavers went 4-0 at home in dual meets last season; it was the first time they had gone unbeaten for a season at Stevens Natatorium. OSU has an all-time record of 12-4 in the pool and OSU is 7-1 at home the past 2 seasons.

Stevens Natatorium is adjacent to Dixon Recreation Center, near Gill Coliseum. The pool opened in 1994 but was not outfitted for competition until prior to the 1999-2000 season.

OSU had scheduled its home meets at Corvallis' Osborn Aquatic Center since the community pool opened for the 1979-80 season. A few meets were still held on campus at Langton Pool.
