No. 7 Cal Volleyball Wins at Washington State, 3-1
Oct. 23, 2003
PULLMAN, WA - The No. 7 ranked Cal volleyball team (17-2, 8-2) defeated Washington State, 3-1 (30-27, 34-36, 30-23, 30-18) Thursday evening at Bohler Gym in Pullman. It was the first time the Golden Bears had defeated the Cougars in Pullman since Sept. 16, 1989, snapping a streak of 13 straight losses at WSU. Cal also won its eighth Pac-10 match of the season, the most conference victories for the Bears since going 9-9 in 1991.
Cal was led by junior All-American Mia Jerkov, who tallied 29 kills, 20 digs and had two service aces. Jerkov, who was featured in the Oct. 27 issue of Sports Illustrated's Faces in the Crowd, hit .338 for the match. The Bears also received an outstanding performance from sophomore middle hitter Alicia Powers, who played outside hitter for Cal in place of injured Gabrielle Abernathy, who is out with a stress fracture in her left foot and is day-to-day. Powers responded with a career-high 14 kills with only two errors in 29 attempts for a .414 hitting percentage. She added five block assists.
Junior middle hitter Camille Leffall was stellar as well, finishing with 13 kills, a .522 hitting percentage and eight block assists. Freshman setter Samantha Carter added 66 assists and the Bears hit an impressive .311 as a team.
'We finally got the monkey off our backs playing in Pullman,' said Cal coach Rich Feller. 'This was a real test for us. We did a lot of substituting in the match and got some great play off the bench from seniors Ashleigh Turner and Jenna Grigsby. I am really pleased with how we played as a team.'
The Bears will next travel to No. 10 ranked Washington (15-4, 6-4), Friday, Oct. 24 at 7 p.m. at Bank of America Arena in Seattle. The Huskies upset No. 6 Stanford, 3-1, Thursday night in Seattle. The Cal-Washington match will be shown on tape delay on Fox Sports Net, Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
