No. 7 Cal Volleyball Wins at No. 10 Washington, 3-2
Oct. 24, 2003
SEATTLE, WA - The No. 7 ranked Cal volleyball team (18-2, 9-2) continued its winning ways in the Northwest with a 3-2 victory (16-30, 30-26, 30-20, 31-33, 15-11) at No. 10 Washington (15-5, 6-5) Friday evening at Bank of America Arena in Seattle. After defeating Washington State Thursday and topping the Cougars and Huskies earlier this season at Haas Pavilion, it was the first time the Golden Bears had swept both Washington and WSU in women's volleyball since 1989.
Cal also won its ninth Pac-10 match of the season, the most conference victories for the Bears since going 9-9 in 1991. Cal has seven Pac-10 matches remaining. The Bears have now been involved in five-game matches in five of their last six contests.
The Cal-Washington match will be shown on tape delay on Fox Sports Net, Saturday, Oct. 25 at 1 p.m.
The Bears were led by junior All-American Mia Jerkov, who had 23 kills, 14 digs and two service aces. Sophomore Jenna Brown, who only played in four of the matches' five games, finished with 15 kills, nine digs and a .500 hitting percentage. Junior middle hitter Camille Leffall had 14 kills and a .367 hitting percentage, while freshman Amanda Fox finished with 11 kills. Freshman setter Samantha Carter had 60 assists and senior defensive specialist Ashleigh Turner recorded 13 digs.
'I am very pleased,' said Cal coach Rich Feller. 'A road sweep in the Pac-10 is something that is extremely valuable. Playing at Washington and Washington State is always tough trip and to win both matches is a great accomplishment.'
The Bears will next host Arizona, Friday, Oct. 31, and Arizona State, Saturday, Nov. 1, with both matches beginning at 7 p.m. at Haas Pavilion.
