Oct. 24, 2003
Eric Peterson's UCLA women and men's cross country 'B' teams competed on Friday (Oct. 24) at the CS Fullerton Invitational, held in Carbon Canyon Regional Park in Brea. The Bruin women tied for first place in the team standings with 55 points. The Bruin men only ran three runners and did not compete in the men's team standings.
UCLA's 'B' team tied for first place with 55 points, along with UC Santa Barbara and Pepperdine. Also in the Top 5 were CS San Marcos (60) and Alliant International (155).
The Bruins had two runners in the Top 10. Junior Carolyn Shea (Waterville, ME) placed fifth over the 5K course in a time of 18:34.4 and redshirt freshman Emily Haigh (Santa Ana/Foothill) finished sixth (18:40.4).
'We used this meet to make the decision on the final two positions for our Pac-10 squad,' Peterson said. 'Carolyn (Shea) and Emily (Haigh) ran solid races today. They have worked very hard to earn a place on our Pac-10 team. Ashley (Allen/24th, 19:30.0) and Mary (Maleta/27th, 19.39.4) also ran personal-bests today.'
The first of the three major 2003 meets will take place on Saturday, Nov. 1, when the Bruin varsity teams, the UCLA women are ranked No. 15 in the U. S. this week, travel to Pullman, WA for the Pac-10 Championships, hosted by Washington State.
