ARIZONA HEAD COACH Mike Hankwitz's REMARKS
ON THE LOSS TO CALIFORNIA:
'It was a disappointing loss because we didn't play nearly as well as we had for the last two weeks. We didn't give ourselves a chance to be in the game. We had opportunities, but we need to score points out of our yards.'
'Defensively, we did a poor job of attacking the line of scrimmage in tackling, and we allowed them to run the ball very effectively. I felt like we had made progress in that area, and I felt like we were making it tough for teams to run, and then we didn't play like we are capable of playing. We felt like we could match up with the receivers and make them execute passing-wise, but we didn't force them into those situations and make it into a passing game. We allowed them to run the ball far too effectively, and we gave up two big runs that we had not been giving up as of late.'
'Offensively, we moved the ball. But, we hurt ourselves with penalties, and we threw a couple of interceptions. Kris Heavner's interception was a case where we, the coaches, put them in the wrong formation, and that allowed a defender to be in there where he would not have been. Nic (Costa) had some pressure, and he was late throwing the ball. The receiver was coming wide open if he had thrown it on time, but he just hesitated and threw it a step-and-a-half late. The corner undercut it, tipped it and intercepted it.'
'Another time we got down there, we were at 3rd-and-7 on the Cal 30, and Biren Ealy got an unnecessary penalty. He was frustrated because he thought he caught it inbounds, and he didn't, but that doesn't justify (the penalty) because that took us out of an area where we could have gone for it on fourth down.'
ON Bobby Gill's TWO MISSED FIELD GOALS:
'He had kicked some of those (50-yard field goals) before, and we felt like he had a reasonable chance. He had the line in that one, and it was perfectly straight, but he didn't quite have the distance. The other one was a kick that we felt he needed to make, and we are going to address that situation this week.'
ON THE TEAM'S LACK OF INTENSITY:
'It is hard to read guys during warm-ups, but as the game progressed, I sensed that we weren't nearly as intense or as focused as we were during the last. That surprised me because we had some time to recover a little, and we were coming off two games where we continued to improve. I was expecting us to continue that improvement, and unfortunately, we did not.'
